Hitch Opening Sequence Analysis

Sound
The first thing we hear is an upbeat pop song which automatically opens the mood up for the film, it makes the audience feel happy. Then we hear a man talking, the mans voice sounds warming and friendly, not in a weird way. So we can tell that the film is probably going to be an easy watch and quite uplifting. We see other characters lips moving but there is no sound coming out of there mouths all we can hear is the man talking and the song in the background. There is non diegetic sound when the main character is talking and another character is in the room. We can hear the main character talking but the other character is oblivious to it. Through the opening sequence there is a lot of on off sound as there is narration from the main character but he is not on screen most of the time, so we are unaware where the sound is coming from, as it is used as a voice over. The music is also non diegetic so we can hear the music but the actors cannot, therefore they don't react to it. The music is parallel to the opening sequence as the song is happy and the sequence is showing people smiling and looking happy, the song is also a love song and the opening sequence is talking about love.
Actor
The actor chosen for the main role is Will Smith so most people recognise him straight away. He seems like the perfect person for the role as he intrigues many people as he has a soft inviting tone to his voice. We don't know what he does as a character but we can tell he is a very intelligent person and seems to know a lot about women. He starts to talk about what his job is but doesn't actually define what it is. It leaves the audience asking many questions. This represents his role well as he has a friendly face.
Enigma Code
The first person that we see is a woman laying in bed, we want to know who the woman is, is she a main character in the film? And what is her relevance to what he is talking about. Who is the man and woman in the sweet shop? Do they know each other, and what is there relationship if so? Who is the man and the woman in the street smiling at each other, do they know each other? We see the woman who we first saw at the beginning of the film in bed, she is in the same room as the man who is talking? So do they know each other? Why is he trying to distract the woman? And lead her into the arms of the other man? Could this describe what his job is? The enigma code used for this opening sequence is excellent as it leaves the audience asking so many questions.
Lighting
The film is set in daylight and it is very bright, this sets a happy tone to the film as it is clear blue sky and the light is shining on the characters faces. This has a warming effect and can effect the way that the audience is feeling, it can make them feel happy.
We see that the woman in the sweet shop is in a uniform so perhaps she works there, this gives us a slight insight into her character. Also the man in the sweetshop is wearing a suit so is he a business man or just wearing it for the fun of it?
Camera; Shots, Angles, Frame & Movement
The first camera angle we see is a front on of a woman, as it is front on this automatically engages the audience to focus on it. A camera shot that is used is panning upwards this draws the audiences attention to certain characters and highlights there importance. Extreme long shots are used to show the entire scenery before we focus in on the character. This is so the audience can get an idea of where the characters are. Also it zooms in onto characters faces, this is so we are drawn in with the character and can take in the expression on their face. A camera angle that is used mainly throughout the opening sequence is neutral, this is where it is a close up of someones face and is head on. This is mainly used when the main character (the narrator) is talking. This makes the audience feel like he is talking to us and makes us listen to everything he is saying. It looks like he is looking straight at us.
Costume & Makeup
The clothes that a character is wearing can give us some basic information about them. The woman that we see in the shop appears to be wearing a uniform, so perhaps she works in that shop. The man that she is talking to is wearing a shirt and tie, so maybe he is a business man, or maybe he is just from an upper class background and this is what he is used to wearing. The three people walking in the street seem to be wearing gym clothes, so maybe they are sporty. The man standing outside the hotel is also dressed smartly so may be upper class or a businessman. The people dressed in costume give the impression that they are actors, so may be artistic people and into drama.
Props
The people walking in the street are holding a yoga mat, this gives us an insight into there character as we know that they are probably sporty and like to keep fit. The woman that is entering the apartment block has a small dog, this shows us that she most probably likes animals, and may live alone and has the dog as a companion. The main character has a briefcase this may tell us that he is a business man.
Setting
We get the impression that the film is most probably set in America as the first voice we hear is an American voice. It looks like it is set in a busy part of America, as there are many cars and different shops and buildings. It is most likely that the film is set in New York as there is yellow taxis in the background which are usually associated with New York. The apartments that it is set in look quite upper class as the entrance is big and looks modern. This could tell us that the woman in the apartment is rich as nice apartments in New York are expensive.
Editing
The only editing that is really used throughout the opening sequence is clean cut transitions, this is where the image just goes from shot to shot with no evident transition. Other than this the only other thing is the opening credits over the picture, that tell you the maker of the film and the main actors and actresses within the film.
