Our Opening Sequence

Art of the Title.

What is the definition of a Title sequence?
A title sequence is the method by which cinematic films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound.
What is the function of a Title Sequence?
To show the audience what the title of the film is and give them key information such as the production company and key cast members. Because of the typography and music used when they are being shown it gives the audience an insight to what the genre is, because usally for a horror film the titles may be in a dark green colour with horror music playing in the background, but for a rom-com the titles may be in a pink colour with an upbeat pop song in the background.

The pink Panther, Juno, Alien.
Select a film Title Sequence shown in the A Brief History of the Art of the Title Sequence and discuss how the Title Sequence uses Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements and what kind of mood/feeling is created as a result?  And what does the use of Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements in the chosen film Title Sequence suggest about the theme/content of the film?
Name of Film: Juno
Use of Typography elements: The font used is plain and block letters, in bright different colours. The font looks childish which gives an element of what the film is about. It gives the audience it is targeted for to be aimed at teens. The writing is not straight and is quite interesting to look at. This fits with the title sequence as the title sequence has a teenage girl walking whilst the titles are playing. The titles are placed in creative places so that the audience notices them but doesn't distract them away from the girl walking.
Use of Visual Imagery/Sound Elements: The music that is playing in the background is a catchy upbeat song. It makes the audience feel happy and gives a clue to what the genre is. From the music in the background we can rule out certain genres such as horror and thriller because the music and titles used would not be fitting for this genre. Because there is a teenage girl walking and she is the main focus of the title sequence we get an idea of the target audience to probably be teenagers and the genre to be a rom-com. The fact that the titles and the girl walking are in a sort of cartoon effect shows that the film is aimed at teenagers because this gives it a childish effect.
Select another film Title Sequence shown in the A Brief History of the Art of the Title Sequence and discuss how the Title Sequence uses Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements and what kind of mood/feeling is created as a result? And what does the use of Typography Elements (text), Visual Imagery/Sound Elements in the chosen film Title Sequence suggest about the theme/content of the film?
Name of Film: Pink Panther
Use of Typography elements: The title used are in bright colours, generally in pink. This relates well back to the title of the actual film being called 'the pink panther.' The titles are in messy font that looks quite childish. A lot of the time the titles are on their own page to highlight the importance of them. The fact that the writing is in bright colours and usally pink makes them stand out to the audience so that the audience actually take some kind of notice to them. The font used for some of it makes it look quite girly although the other font used makes it look more masucline, because of a lot of the other colours used are green and blue. This balances out the target audience. Because the typography is so femine and childish it lets the audience rule out genres such as horror and thriller, and makes them think that it is probably a comedy.
Use of Visual Imagery/Sound Elements: The music that is used adds a level of mystery because it sounds like someone tiptoing around. This shows that the genre is probably mystery with an element of comedy and the music sounds quite jokey as well. This is also supported by the visual imagery used because the imagery shows a detetive running around which shows the mystery element and the panther is joking around which shows its a comedy. From the friendly music, typography and the visual imagery used helps the highlight the genre and the target audience. The genre is most probably a detetive film and a comedy, and is fit for familes of all ages and sexes.
